Swiss voters agreed by a nearly two-to-one margin on Sunday to adopt tighter gun controls in line with changes to European Union rules, heading off a clash with Brussels.

The measure passed in the binding referendum under the Swiss system of direct democracy by a 64-36% margin, provisional final results showed.

The restrictions, which apply to non-EU member Switzerland because it is part of Europe’s Schengen open-border system, had raised hackles among shooting enthusiasts ahead of the vote.

Failure to adopt the rules could have forced Switzerland to leave the passport-free Schengen zone and the Dublin joint system for handling asylum requests.

Honest question, why? They had one of the most open gun ownership laws and are one of the lowest countries with gun violence in the world. Why would they need to tighten the control?

Hardly so. Switzerland has high gun homicide and gun suicide rates among first world countries, and one of highest of unintentional gun deaths.

Thank you for correcting me. I had thought I read just the opposite. No wonder the vote was so high to tighten gun control there.

Well when socialist first world countries are taking away rights that is not to hard to do.

Anyways sad to see the people falling for the propaganda and giving up their rights from one of the few remaining good countries in Europe. Just sad!
