...here's a question for that: why'd things escalate so fast to start with? Did those cops not try to use less-than-lethal force before pulling their sidearms out?

They did not escalate so fast. They warned him. Then they tazed him. The tazer did not work and even then they did not draw there weapons but took him down to the ground and he still resisted arrest.
