(The Guardian) German police have evacuated a shopping centre in Munich after an armed man went on a shooting spree in the building, police have said.

Several people were injured and there were unconfirmed reports of deaths, local media said.

An emergency call was received at 6pm local time after the man opened fire in a pharmacy at the Olympia shopping centre in the Moosach district of the Bavarian city.

“We believe this is a big incident,” a police spokeswoman told German media.

Police and ambulance crews were on site within minutes of the call. The man is believed to have fled the shopping centre and headed for a nearby U-Bahn (underground) station.

There was no indication as to the motive for the attack.

Germany has been on high alert after a man wielding an axe and knife attacked train passengers near the southern city of Würzburg earlier this week.

The Olympia shopping centre is a two-tiered glass-covered mall that was built on the site of the 1972 Olympics. The Munich Games were overshadowed by a terrorist attack in which 11 Israeli sportsmen and a German policeman were killed after being taken hostage by Palestinian terrorists.

More details soon …

(The Guardian) Police are telling people to stay clear of the Olympia shopping centre in Munich.

--- --- ---

(The Guardian) Suddeutsche Zeitung cites a police spokesperson as saying several people have been killed and more injured in the shootout at the Olympia shopping mall.

The paper said a large police operation was under way and that police were “assuming there was just a single perpetrator”.

An employee at the nearby DM drugstore told the paper by phone that she heard “shots and saw injured people ... We can not go outside.”

The Guardian has not independently confirmed these details.

(The Guardian) The security consulting firm Kronos Advisory has the following:

--#MUNICH News of events in Germany is beginning to spread on IS-linked Telegram channels (Michael W. Smith, II, Kronos Secuirty - 22 July 2016)

There is, however, nothing at the moment that gives any indication of any possible motives for the shootings and it should be noted that talk on such channels does not in itself point directly to any involvement by Islamic State militants.

(The Guardian) Staff in the shopping centre where shooting broke out are still hiding, an employee has told Reuters by telephone.

NTV television reported that German police special forces had arrived at the scene.

“Many shots were fired, I can’t say how many but it’s been a lot,” the employee, who declined to be identified, said from the mall in Munich.

“All the people from outside came streaming into the store and I only saw one person on the ground who was so severely injured that he definitely didn’t survive.

“We have no further information, we’re just staying in the back in the storage rooms. No police have approached us yet.” As yet, police have only officially confirmed “several injuries”....

(The Guardian) The German interior ministry has confirmed three dead.

Reports of shootings at Karlsplatz, Stachus and Odeonplatz are unconfirmed. Odeonplatz is around 7km away from the Olympia shopping centre. Either the same man who fled shopping centre, or various perpetrators are on the loose.

(BBC News) Attackers still on the run
--Lena Deutch, a police reporter for Bavarian Radio, says police are trying to clear everyone off the streets in parts of central Munich, as they search for the person or people who carried out the shooting.

All of the police forces are at the shopping centre and at the official places in Munich as well and they're calling out that nobody's allowed to go to the official places. They are trying to close everything down because we do not know where this person who's been doing the shooting is at the moment.

I'm sorry Mr. Talking Head from Sky News.

"Terror" has become an ideology in its own right instead of being a "Tactic".

Terrorism for its Own Sake, with no larger motive or goal, has taken on a life of its own and has become the outlet for various individuals to express what they are with no other objective in mind, and can be thought of as the logical extreme of the "random act of violence" phenomenon.

(BBC News) Barman describes panic and fear
--A barman at a pub in Munich has described the sense of growing panic as news broke of shots fired at a local shopping centre.

Sam Pound, who works at the nearby Kilians Irish bar said: "We're getting information from BBC News and local Twitter feeds from German authorities, but it's hard to know what's realistic and what's not.

"We've heard about another attack about 400 metres from us which is very worrying.

"We're in a cellar bar so we feel quite safe, but when you go to the street you can hear a lot of sirens and helicopters."
