Multiple people, including a police officer, were injured after a gunman opened fire outside a courthouse.

Emergency services were called to Berrien County Courthouse in Michigan following the shooting on Monday afternoon, according to NBC.

Michigan State Police and the Berrien County Sheriff's Department confirmed there had been a shooting.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder said police had secured the scene and begun an investigation into the shooting.

The shooting comes just days after a gunman shot dead five police officers in Dallas - itself in the wake of two unarmed black men being fatally shot by law enforcement.

How awful that this seems to be becoming a regular occurrence :( they really do need to do something about it if I am honest as it really is getting out of hand now as the gun laws seem to not be working as well as they should.

Two court bailiffs were killed Monday afternoon when gunfire rang out at a southwestern Michigan courthouse, authorities said. The gunman was later killed, as well.

Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey said the confrontation took place about 2:25 p.m. ET at at the county courthouse in St. Joseph. Several other people, including a sheriff's deputy, were injured.

All were stable at a hospital, said Bailey, who said the scene was secure. The courthouse was evacuated, and people were directed to an emergency shelter that had been set up.

"I stand here with a heavy heart today with what occurred at the courthouse," he said.

Few details were immediately available, but Bailey indicated that the gunman was in court while already in custody. "I won't say what the suspect was in for," he said.
