A large part of central London was covered in smoke this afternoon after a fire broke out above a restaurant in Chinatown.
Thick black smoke filled streets in Soho after the blaze broke out above Wan Chai Corner on Gerrard Street and Gerrard Place.
Firefighters from a station next door were quick to arrive on the scene.
Most of the damage appears to be in the roof of the building, but the basement kitchen of the restaurant were also affected.
London Fire Brigade said: ‘Six fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers have been called to a fire in a restaurant on Gerrard Street in Soho.
‘The fire is affecting part of the basement kitchen, the restaurant’s ducting – its extraction system – between the ground floor and the roof and part of the building’s roof.’
Firefighters and police were today urging people to stay away from Chinatown after a huge fire broke out.
