"Big Papi" David Ortiz is in stable condition after being wounded in a shooting Sunday in his home country, according to the former Boston Red Sox slugger's agent, Fernando Cuza.

Ortiz, 44, was ambushed by a man who got off a motorcycle and shot him in the back at nearly point-blank range Sunday night in his native Dominican Republic, authorities said.

Dominican National Police Director Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte said Ortiz was at the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo at 8:50 p.m. when the gunman approached from behind and shot him. Ortiz was taken to a medical facility where he underwent surgery, and his condition was stable, Bautista said.

Video of the shooting. Obviously (not for the faint of heart) if you don't want to see it. The video is surveillance footage and not close up or anything.

ESPN reported that the surgery lasted six hours, and a team of surgeons had to remove part of Ortiz's intestines and colon and his gallbladder. Ortiz also suffered liver damage, ESPN reported."

This does not appear to be a robbery as first reported. This looks like an assassination attempt or a hit job.

All reports seem to indicate that he's going to be okay, so that's good at least. I was really shocked when I saw this.

Update

"Authorities in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday night reportedly apprehended a second suspect in the shooting of former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, who continues his recovery at Massachusetts General Hospital following two surgeries to treat his gunshot wounds.

The Associated Press, citing a spokesperson with the Dominican national prosecutor’s office, reported the second suspect was in custody Tuesday night — although it was unclear whether the new suspect, who has yet to be named, fired the bullet that hit Ortiz, 43, in the back as he sat at a street
side bar in the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo on Sunday night.

Ortiz remained in stable condition in the intensive care unit at Mass General, where he is expected to remain for at least several days."

Wonder what the motive was
At a press conference in the Dominican Republic Wednesday afternoon, authorities said that a group was offered 400,000 Dominican pesos (around $8,000) to kill Ortiz. Five people whom police said were involved in the attack, including the alleged gunman, have been arrested, and the handgun used has been recovered. Authorities added that neither the director of the group nor the motive have been determined.
