A woman left her child in a car for 40 minutes so that she could go shopping while temperatures outside hit 30°C.
Parking in the disabled bay at Watersfield Shopping Centre in Watford she then locked the door before going into a branch of Next.
The young child was left in a car seat while she wandered round the store.
For 40 minutes staff tried to summon her using the shop’s tannoy system before she returned to her car.
Police eventually arrived and released the child from the white Nissan Qashqai.
Temperatures inside cars very quickly become extremely hot, even if the car is in the shade. Within an hour it is around twice as hot as it is outside.
Even with the windows open, a car can become too hot, particularly if there is little or no wind.
This graph shows how quickly temperatures go up in 10-minute intervals.
