"People are blaming ‘gentrification’ for the cancellation of a popular annual free street party.
Revellers planning to head to Brixton for Splash have been left disappointed after Lambeth Council blocked the event, which has been running for a decade.
Councillors cited a rise in violence, drug-taking and arrests during last year’s Splash, the Evening Standard reported.
The cancellation of the event, which attracted more than 40,000 people last year, led to partygoers expressing their sadness on social media.
In an open letter to residents, the council said Splash had become ‘a victim of its own success’ with ‘uncontrollable’ crowds of people coming to Brixton.
Previously, the council has been accused of trying to put a stop to the event as it did not fit with the ‘gentrified image’ of Brixton, the newspaper reported.
Police have asked people who planned to attend Splash not to come to Brixton as the party won’t be taking place."
